A dichroic polarizer covers the liquid crystal display. The polarized light from the background is transmitted, but the part which makes up the numerals has been rotated 90° and is blocked, forming the dark areas. If a polarizer with axis perpendicular to the surface polarizer is placed over the display as in the top right image, the entire display looks black.
一个偏振光极化器覆盖在液晶显示器上。来自背景的偏振光被透过，但构成数字部分的光已被旋转90°并被阻挡，形成暗区。如果像右上图所示，在显示器上放置一个轴线垂直于表面极化器的偏振器，整个显示器看起来会是黑色的。
