For a satellite that seemed plagued with problems from the start, the small Hipparcos satellite has made large contributions to the measurement of astronomical distances by making much more accurate stellar parallax measurements than could be made from Earth. 对于一个从一开始就存在问题的卫星,小号Hipparcos卫星通过比从地球上能测量的更为精确的恒星视差测量,对天体距离的测量做出了重大贡献。
The Hipparcos satellite contains a small 29-cm mirror designed to measure the positions of stars very accurately. It's parallax measurements are at least 10 times greater in accuracy than measurements from the Earth's surface. It's mission was to measure accurate distances of nearly a million stars out to a distance of 200 parsecs. Hipparcos卫星配备了一个小的29厘米的镜子,用于非常精确地测量恒星的位置。其视差测量的精度至少是地球表面测量的10倍。其任务是精确测量近百万颗恒星的距离,最远至200秒差距。
An important contribution of Hipparcos was to make precision parallax measurements of 273 Cepheid variables, 2 of them not previously observed. Since the Cepheids are one of the keys to astronomical distance measurement, this improvement in accuracy has far-reaching consequences.
