The Lanzhou University team, in collaboration with Henan Zhongyuan Optoelectronics and other institutions, has completed imaging tests from Yangshan Reservoir to Dui Jianzi. This field trial employed natural mountain radiation to conduct a three-dimensional “T-road view” of the existing structure and adjacent slopes, achieving density imaging of complex rock masses. This breakthrough provides a novel non-destructive technical pathway for human-scale safety monitoring.

Recently, Professor Liu Zhiyi's research team at our university was invited by the internationally renowned geoscience journal Journal of Geography, Chigaku Zasshi to publish a cover review article entitled ‘Research Progress of Muography in China’ in Volume 134, Issue 6, 2025. This paper systematically reviews the development history and current research status of muon imaging technology in China, introducing the technical principles of both transmission and scattering imaging. Through exemplary case studies—including simulated research at the Qin Shi Huang Mausoleum by Beijing Normal University, volcanic detection by the Beijing Institute of Satellite Environmental Engineering, and Xi'an City Wall conservation by Lanzhou University—the paper demonstrates muography's potential applications in cultural heritage preservation, mineral resource exploration, and infrastructure monitoring. Notably, Lanzhou University's independently developed CORMIS triangular plastic scintillator imaging system achieved multiple domestic firsts in field deployment.

Lanzhou University Applies Muon Imaging Technology to Mineral Exploration

Professor Liu Zhiyi's team from the Ministry of Education's Frontier Science Center for Rare Isotopes at Lanzhou University and the Gansu Nuclear Industry Research Institute successfully conducted Asia's first natural muon geophysical prospecting experiment at the Zaozigou Gold Mine in Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. The experiment enabled relatively accurate detection and internal structural imaging of the mine's veins, worked-out areas, and geological structures. The related research findings were recently published in the International Journal of Geophysics.
